Unlike a kitchen, your bedroom is a space made entirely for relaxing in. So when it comes to transforming this space, it’s essential to thoroughly consider all design elements you are looking to go with.

One of the most important design factors to consider is the main colours you’ll choose for your bedroom, as this can really set the tone of the room. There have been many colour psychology studies suggesting that specific colours create specific atmospheres and moods. Therefore, when deciding on colours for your bedroom, hues should carefully be chosen to evoke certain emotional responses.

Here, we look at a few key colours and their corresponding moods:

Red Bedroom

Red is a loud, vibrant tone that makes you feel energetic and passionate. It is a fiery and warm colour, with connotations of power. However, due to its depth, red is often only used as an accent colour as it may otherwise seem overpowering, especially in smaller rooms.

Yellow Bedroom

Moving on to yellow, this colour can brighten up a small, dark, enclosed space and can link to feelings of happiness and optimism. However, only the right shade of yellow will evoke this sense of happiness and optimism as, if it is too bright, it can spark feelings of agitation, and a too-dull yellow may make you feel jealous or ill.

Blue Bedroom

Blue is reminiscent of nature and is thought to promote intelligence, serenity, and loyalty. It can make you feel calm and soothed, which is ideal when looking to create a peaceful home environment, making blue the perfect shade for a bedroom.

Green Bedroom

Green, similarly to blue, is reminiscent of nature. Green can feel rejuvenating and express a sense of freshness, growth, and vitality. Many people like green because it helps them feel safe and secure. It’s a calming hue that promotes feelings of relaxation.

Purple Bedroom

Purple can spark passion and intensity, elevating a room with richness. It can make your bedroom feel lively, which can make you feel light-hearted and playful. However, you can also play purple up or down depending on the shade that you choose.

Orange Bedroom

Orange is thought to stimulate creativity and, similarly to red, is a loud, vibrant tone. Its warmth may energise you, especially if a vibrant shade is used. Orange is a welcoming colour and can promote a sense of cheerfulness to make your bedroom feel cosy and inviting.

Black Bedroom

Although black does have the potential to be harsh, it can connote elegance, sophistication, and power. When combined with the right colour, your space will feel classy, but if you lean too heavily on black, your emotions may be negatively affected.

White Bedroom

Finally, white can give a refreshed and cleansed look, symbolising goodness and purity. It is also an excellent partner with most other colours and is great at opening up small rooms, making them feel larger, which can help put you at ease and relax.

It may be the case that you decide to go all out with colour on walls or accessories and therefore opt for a more monochromatic palette when replacing bedroom doors and drawers, or it may be the case that you do it the other way around.

However you decide to transform your space, catering to your preferences is essential when it comes to your bedroom as, after all, it is a place where you relax, sleep, and enjoy your own comfort. Your bedroom should be a space that you know you’ll love.

Modern bedrooms are known for their sleek, crisp, and clean aesthetic. Their colours tend to be neutral or muted to make the space feel light and airy, and this is usually paired with a lot of natural light.

Less is always more with a modern room and if you’re looking to create a space that will bring a calming and soothing atmosphere, then a modern bedroom style may be the right design for you.

Modern bedrooms are typically characterised by clean lines and sleek surfaces. One of the best ways to achieve this is to update your wardrobe doors and drawer fronts with handleless or slab style doors.

Here we highlight a few of the collections and styles available at Kitchen Door Hub that will help you successfully achieve this sleek, modern look.

Handleless doors

With defined lines and no obtrusive handles, our handleless bedroom door collection creates that crisp look and creates a sense of minimalism.

This sense of minimalism is perfect for a bedroom, as the absence of furniture and clutter makes the space feel so much more relaxing.

Kitchen Door Hub supplies a range of doors from 4 different collections; Gravity, Bella, Zurfiz, and Unique. Across these 4 ranges, we offer a wide variety of different styles, so you’re sure to find a door which is perfect for you and your home.

Here’s a selection of some of our favourite handleless doors that can transform your bedroom:

From left to right:

– Bella Elland Matt Pebble

– Bella Knebworth Matt Graphite

– Unique Avienda Ivory

Slab Style Doors

Although handleless doors probably have the edge when it comes to creating a modern space, the sleek look can still be achieved with slab style doors. The only real, noticeable difference is that one style has handles while the other doesn’t.

For those who prefer handles on their units, slab style doors may even be the better option as they still create that sleek look and, with the large range of handles that we have to offer at Kitchen Door Hub, you can make your bedroom look perfectly modern.

Here’s a selection of some of our favourite slab style doors available at KDH:

From left to right:

– Gravity Evora Stone Graphite

– Bella Pisa Matt Denim

If you’re struggling to make a decision on whether to go handleless or not, then our blog post, pros and cons of handleless doors, offers some helpful tips that will help you decide. However, if you are set on which style of door/drawer that you want to go for, then take a look at our colour options.

As discussed at the start of this blog post, modern spaces are usually characterised by their neutral or muted colours such as white, cream, grey, black, and oak. However, this does not mean that you necessarily need to stick to these colourways as you are free to experiment in any way you want.

Modern spaces can still feel modern with the inclusion of a bold door colour such as Baltic Blue or Chilli Red. Alternatively, you could stick with neutral colours for your wardrobe doors, but add accent colours using cushions, blankets, artwork, etc.

Changing cabinet doors in your kitchen completely transforms your space, but a lot of thought has to go into choosing the perfect doors. There are so many choices regarding how you want your kitchen to look, including the style and colour, and we know that it is essential that you are aware of all options to ensure that you will be pleased with the result and the choices that you have made. After all, we all want to make every room in our home a space we love.

Aesthetic

The first step to choosing your perfect kitchen doors is understanding what aesthetic you want your kitchen to have. Whether you want a modern, shaker, traditional, cottage core or minimalist kitchen, there will be a perfect kitchen door for you.

Modern kitchens, as seen above, are all about achieving that sleek look, usually characterised by a monochromatic colour palette, clean lines, and minimalism, although there are endless possibilities for how you want your modern kitchen to look.

Shaker kitchens have a very simple and minimalist design, typically with flat centre panels, little to no ornamentation or decoration, and will usually be made of wood, although usually painted to give the room a pop of colour.

Traditional kitchens usually look luxurious and cosy. They are characterised by the use of natural materials, soft muted colours, basic colour palettes, and decorative details and embellishments such as raised panels, crown moulding, and marble or quartz-reminiscent countertops.

Cottage-core kitchens usually have a cosy feel to them. They are essentially a mix of country, traditional, and modern, with features of rustic scenes and natural materials. It’s the opposite of a minimalist design, embracing colour as well as antique/vintage pieces.

Minimalist kitchens are also typically monochromatic and, as the name implies, are very simplistic. They are all about doing more with less and are defined by their sleek lines, functional and integrated appliances, frameless cabinetry, and the occasional pop of colour.

These are just to name a few of the most popular aesthetics, and, of course, there are many more. So, you may prefer one not listed here, or maybe you will find yourself experimenting and creating an aesthetic personal to you.

Style

Once you are set on what aesthetic you want in your kitchen, you can browse the styles of kitchen doors available, such as those shown above. Handleless and slab style doors usually give a sleek look, while shaker and woodgrain doors give your kitchen a cosier feel, and while some styles have names that are obvious to what aesthetic they belong to, such as shaker doors, the style could also happen to be the perfect fit for another aesthetic. It’s all down to what your preferences are.

Colour

The colour that you choose for your kitchen is probably the most important step as it will be what sets the foundation of your kitchen. For example, if you choose a bold colour such as black, deep blue, or red, all the attention will go to the cabinets, whereas if you go for a more subtle option, the attention may come down to what you decide to decorate your space with.

A kitchen island can be a brilliant way to break up your space and allow for an extra surface for preparation, washing or cooking. Some choose to have their island stand on their own as a statement piece, whereas others will opt for a breakfast bar style, connecting the island to another block of units to create a peninsula. There are advantages to both, and both can look amazing when done well.

1. Assess the space

As with other kitchen plans, planning an island will need to start with an assessment of the area you have. It is important to do this so that you can ensure that your kitchen will work with an island in place. You will generally need at least 1m of space between the island and the run of units it will be near in the kitchen, to ensure that there is sufficient room for movement, traffic and opening of all cabinet doors. This can be a limiting factor and may mean that an island is not suitable for your room if you cannot accommodate this.

2. What will the island be used for?

The island itself is a very handy piece of extra space within the kitchen, but you have to make sure that you are taking advantage of it, otherwise it will just be an expensive novelty. One of the best ways to make use of it is to fit a hob or kitchen sink to the area. This gives you a place out of the way of the other surfaces and appliances to perform these tasks with plenty of room for keeping items you will be using while cooking or washing. If you were to choose to fit the hob to the island, it would mean you can also take advantage of a hanging extractor fan. These are a modern and stylish choice, which lets you bring the kitchen of your dreams to life. They can also be adapted into a breakfast bar, meaning you can use space previously taken by a table for this instead.

3. How is an island constructed?

Islands can be built in a few different ways depending on the budget, the skill of the carpenter and the style you’re trying to achieve within the room. We recommend using peninsula units, which are units with increased depth and an opening on both sides. These can be used then to hold the worktop and can be easily adapted to fit a sink or hob above them. They also allow you to use the full depth of the cupboard for storing larger items, and mean you can access items from both sides, allowing you to reduce traffic in the corridor of the kitchen. Another way in which it can be done is simply using standard units. This is ideal if you lack space for a full depth breakfast bar style island and allows you to achieve the look for less. Finally, if you are opting for the larger depth, but room for chairs or stools underneath, you can use standard depth units with supporting pilasters where the worktop overhangs.

We offer a range of peninsula units for a freestanding or connected peninsula island:

4. Extra elements

If you’ve chosen to go for an island, you may be considering what else you can add to it to help achieve your dream kitchen. Truth is, there are a huge number of possibilities that can be achieved. One of the most popular accessories to an island is a hanging light fixture. These can be functional, enabling much better visibility when working on the island, but also can be extremely stylish. Another great extra that can be added would be a contrasting worktop, as pictured below. These can help to add an extra layer to the design and coordinate well. Additionally, they can function as a breakfast bar, or extra counter space.

Practical Advantages

Extra worktop space for preparing meals

Deep storage for large items

Can replace a dining table with a more multipurpose

Cosmetic Advantages

Can be used to contrast with the rest of the kitchen

Divides up the kitchen

Can be accessorised to add more character to the room

Overall, we believe an island to be the hallmark of a modern and functional kitchen, while also providing the attractiveness and style needed. So, if your room can accommodate one, we say to go for it.
If you’re looking for something understated or contemporary, then a kitchen or bedroom that takes advantage of modern style principles and trends could be right up your street. Open, light, minimalist and clean are key to a modern feel. Below we will explore which styles to consider.

Slab Doors

Slab (flat) doors are one of the most effective ways to achieve a modern design. Their lack of texture or pattern provides a minimalist appearance and, due to this, they can be used in virtually any finish without looking out of place, which gives you unmatched flexibility and choice. Slab doors work especially well for fitted wardrobes, allowing it to be cleanly integrated as part of the wall.

Check out our massive range of modern slab doors

Handleless Doors

Using handles is old hat. There are a huge number of styles available these days which can eliminate the need for them at all. Handleless doors provide a flat profile and a convenient way to open the door. One of the most common styles is a J-pull, named due to the J shape of the groove which is built into the door. These offer an easy-to-use, full-length way to open the door.

Another style of handleless doors is the true handleless configuration, which allows you to make any door handleless. This is done through the use of a handleless rail, which is recessed into the unit and allows you to reach in and pull the door from the back. The choice you have in this style is unmatched, due to the ability to use a slab, shaker or any other style you could think of.

Open Cupboards

Another unique way in which the kitchen or bedroom can be made modern is by omitting doors altogether. Open units with shelving are a great way to make your room stand out from the ordinary design. They remove the cost of buying doors and hinges, which lets your budget go further. The great thing about this is it can be mixed in with other styles, allowing some units to be open and others closed, which can really improve the variety and individuality in your bedroom.

Bold Colours

Gone are the days of creams and oaks, a recent modern trend is using a bold colour. Bedroom & kitchen manufacturers have finally caught onto this, and the number of choices is large, ranging from dusky pinks to indigo blues, you’re sure to find one that piques your interest. These can then be paired with a complementary wall and tile colour, or if you’re very brave, a contrasting colour. The great thing about this range of stylish colours is the uniqueness you can bring without adding many patterns or clashing textures.

Check out our Gravity range for many bold colour choices

Modern and clean spaces can be a much easier task to manage, and the more minimalist design means your budget can be used on other aspects of the room.

A handleless kitchen is a more modern and stylish option than other kitchen cupboard door and drawer handles. It looks clean, uncluttered and streamlined. If you’ve got an open plan house, with your living room or dining room flowing into the kitchen, you’ll find that handleless kitchen cabinets will offer fluid movement throughout the house, giving excellent feng shui.

That being said, there’s more to focus on than just looks when it comes to choosing the style of kitchen doors that will suit your lifestyle. Whether you’re thinking about having handleless kitchen doors with a push-to-open mechanism, a handle groove, or a handleless cabinet rail, there are a few things to consider. To help you out, we’ve come up with the advantages and disadvantages of choosing handleless kitchen doors.

The pros and cons of handleless kitchen cabinets

Pro: Handleless Kitchen Cupboards are Safer

Everyone knows what it’s like to bash their hip or head on kitchen cabinet knobs and kitchen drawer handles. It hurts, and quite frankly we could all do without it. From catching sleeves to ripping jeans on a handle, we’ve all been there. Handleless kitchen doors remove this issue, as there is nothing to catch yourself on. If you have kids, then it means there is one less thing for you to worry about them walking into.

Con: Handleless Kitchens Cabinets Need Extra Cleaning

If you’ve got a handleless kitchen door that has a channel at the top where you slide your fingers to open it, you’ll be surprised at the amount of dust and crumbs can get in there. This isn’t to say these crevices will constantly be filled with dirt, but it is something to take into consideration – especially if you want a kitchen that requires minimal maintenance (don’t we all).

Pro: Handleless Kitchens Carcasses Look Amazing

Handleless kitchen units look incredible. Their clean, effortless finish will give your kitchen a contemporary and sleek design that is hard to achieve with any other style of kitchen furniture. Some styles of handleless kitchen doors and drawers require minimal touching on the front of the door, so you can go for a high gloss finish that would otherwise show fingerprints and marks. In recent times, the trend has been for the even more modern variant, true handleless kitchens, which use a stylish metal rail instead of a built in groove.

Pro: Handleless Kitchens Complement Kitchen Accessories

Due to the modern and simplistic look that handleless kitchens offer, if you’ve got some modern kitchen accessories that you want to use, such as a coffee machine or a toaster, they’ll go with your kitchen theme very well. If you’re hiring a kitchen specialist, let them know what accessories you have, and they will create the perfect kitchen for you.

If you’ve got an eye for style and a wardrobe to match, you may struggle to work with an ordinary bedroom. In situations like these, it’s best to get creative and make use of more interesting and unique storage solutions. In this post, we look at a few of the best storage solutions that will maximise space in your bedroom.

Wirework Shoe Racks

If you’re limited for room space in your bedroom, you can expand your overall storage within the units you have by taking advantage of wirework storage. If you have a large shoe collection, you can fit one of our shoe racks, allowing you to layer your shoes neatly, instead of them being messily strewn at the bottom of your wardrobe.

These are available in stackable or pull-out variants. Our convenient and practical stackable shoe racks come complete with brackets and clips, providing you with the perfect solution for storing your shoe collection. As each unit is sold individually, you can simply customise the number purchased according to your needs with room to add more in the future, if necessary, when your collection grows. Similarly, the pull-out is a useful space-saving solution that is conveniently side mounted to store your entire shoe collection while always maintaining easy access.

Shop our telescopic/stackable shoe racks

Browse our pull-out shoe rack

Bridging Units

When you’re tight on floor space, bridging units can help you bridge that gap. Easily worked into an existing installation or used as part of a new project, they can provide a large amount of extra storage space above the area where a unit on the floor would not work.

They can be used over the bed, above a TV or media unit, or anywhere else there is space. They can even be stacked to provide extra height. The range on offer is very flexible, with varying heights, depths, and widths to make sure they work in your space, including made to measure sizes.

Browse our bridging units

Internal Drawers

Drawers enable you to improve the storage efficiency of your bedroom and use space that would otherwise be left empty. Internal drawers are especially great, as they can be worked into existing installations, or used as a discreet way to provide extra room in your new project. Available in two or three drawer variants, as well as all of the standard wardrobe widths, they can be easily utilised with no extra planning required.

Browse the 2 drawer and 3 drawer units.

Fitting new kitchen door handles to cabinet doors in your kitchen is a fantastic way to change the look and feel of the space. Should you be looking to revamp your kitchen cabinets, then changing the handles should be at the top of your to-do list. Simple and easy to complete, we’re going to run you through the basics so you can do it yourself.

What will I need?

The first thing you’ll need is your handles. Whether you’re opting for a traditional look or a more contemporary one, once you’ve decided on your size and style, you can place your order with Kitchen Door Hub safe in the knowledge that you’ll be enjoying a brand new look in no time.

Next, you’ll need to make sure you have all the right tools. Here’s what you will need:

Drill & drill bit

Screwdriver

Screws

Tape measure

Spirit level

Pencil

Handle drilling jig (optional – recommended)

Step 1: Finding the Right Position for the Handles

When deciding where to place your kitchen door handles there are a few basic rules and guidelines that can help. As a general rule of thumb, door handles on base units should be placed near to the top, and near the bottom for wall mounted top units. They should also always be attached on the opposite side to any hinges as this keeps access to the cupboards as easy as possible.

If you have the handle drilling jig, you can save a lot of time at this point. All you would need to do is identify the holes on the jig which line up with the holes on the handle. Then you just need to set the adjustable top and side hooks to position the holes in the desired location on the door. Finally, you can then drill through the holes and your handle will be perfectly set. The great thing about a jig, is that you only need to set it once for each door type, saving a ton of time marking and measuring.

Otherwise see below:

In order to fix your door handles in the correct position, hold the handle in place and mark the outside screw hole using your pencil. Position the handle for marking using the following measurements:

For Base Units:

Mark 50mm in from the edge that will open (opposite the hinges) and just below the top.

For Top Units:

Again, mark 50mm in from the opening edge, but this time just above the bottom.

For Kitchen Drawers:

Find the exact centre, both vertically and horizontally. You want your kitchen drawer handle to be fixed right in the middle. Once you have found the middle, measure half the length of your handle to the left and mark. It is also worth noting that if you have base units and drawers side by side, you may want the handles to align depending on your kitchen’s layout.

When you have your initial point marked, use a tape measure and spirit level to determine where your second screw will go. Remember, any marks you make with your pencil at this stage need to be nice and light, you don’t want to struggle should you need to remove them!

Step 2: Drilling the Holes

Once you’re happy with the positioning of your kitchen handles and you have each unit evenly marked, it is time to drill the holes needed to screw them in place.

The easiest way to do that is with an electric drill and a 3/16th drill bit. Make sure you check the size needed though as there is often a degree of variation.

Once you are confident that you have the correct sized bit, drill into your carefully marked points.

Step 3: Tightening the Screws

Now that you have your holes drilled, it’s time to fix the kitchen door handle in place. To do this, simply line up your handle with your new holes, insert the screw and tighten. You can use a screwdriver or your drill for this.

Remember not to tighten the screws too much initially. Make sure you have both in place before tightening them up equally.

Step 4: Repeat the Process

Ta-da! All done. Now stand back and admire your handy work. Hopefully they’re looking nice and straight. If they are and you have other units to fit, you can repeat steps 1 to 3 for all remaining ones. You may find it easier to mark all of the doors up and then fit all of the handles one by one – it’ll be quicker too.

If you’re looking at redecorating or renovating your kitchen, the type of kitchen cabinet and cupboard doors you choose will have an influence over your budget. Kitchen cabinets are the first thing people will notice when they walk into a kitchen, so you want to make sure you’ve chosen a material and style that reflects who you are and suits your budget.

We’ve peeled back the layers and have looked at what kitchen carcasses and doors are made out of, so that you can choose the right materials.

Melamine-faced kitchen doors

Melamine-faced kitchen doors (also known as MFC doors) give the aesthetic of hardwood at a cheaper price. Created from a combination of compressed wood particles and encased in a resin and paper finish, these doors come in a wide range of styles, such as the PWS range, and colours, making it easy to create a bespoke look to suit your kitchen.

Pros of melamine-faced kitchen doors

Great for those on a budget.

Come in a wide range of colours and styles.

Has a sleek uniform finish.

Cons of melamine-faced kitchen doors

Hard impacts will result in chipping and cracks on the wood coating.

If there are any cracks and water gets in, this will further damage the doors.

Less choice in colours and accessories.

The kitchen in the image above uses melamine, these are our Astra range.

Hardwood kitchen cabinet doors

If you’ve always dreamed of a traditional kitchen, (such as a shaker style), then hardwood is a great choice. Whether you want oak, ash, cherry, pine or hickory, this type of material will look fantastic. What makes hardwood such an excellent choice is that this material lasts for decades and can withstand the wear and tear that’s expected in a kitchen – perfect for those who have pets and/or kids! However, hardwood is a little more expensive than other types of kitchen cabinet doors.

Pros of hardwood kitchen cabinet doors

Hardwood cabinets are easy to repair if cracked or scratched.

Hardwood is durable.

Hardwood comes in a wide range of styles, colours, types, and finishes.

Hardwood can be customised.

Cabinets can be re-stained or painted to give a new aesthetic – great for future redecorating.

Cons of hardwood kitchen cabinet doors

Higher product cost.

Usually restricted to standard sizes.

Hardwood expands and contracts in the heat, which can result in warping over time.

Hardwood requires specific cleaning products.

The kitchen above is a timber Mornington Shaker style kitchen with painted doors.

Vinyl-wrapped kitchen doors

Vinyl-wrapped kitchen cupboard doors are made from cut MDF panels that have been routed, profiled, glued and then covered with vinyl that has been attached using heat and a vacuum. This style of door has no joints as the wrap covers the front and sides. At Kitchen Door Hub, you can view our Zurfiz range for more vinyl-wrapped doors

Pros of vinyl-wrapped kitchen doors

Budget friendly.

Easy to clean.

Uniformity in colour and look.

Wide selection of finishes and styles.

Cons of vinyl-wrapped kitchen doors

If the units are abused, the vinyl can peel and delaminate.

Doesn’t offer the ‘natural’ wood look that people prefer.

More limited in colour options than a paintable finish (though paintable vinyl is available).

The image above features a vinyl wrapped Metropole kitchen

Glass kitchen cupboard doors

Choosing glass cabinet doors is a great way to upgrade the look of your kitchen, but should only be used if you keep the inside of your cabinets smart and well organised. While glass doors have been around for a while, they haven’t always been in fashion, but look great when done properly.

You can really add depth and style to your glass and wood cabinets when you add cupboard lighting. That being said, glass doors can be costly and very heavy, although on offer now are acrylic doors, which would be lighter. Glass kitchen cupboard doors come in a range of core materials, from solid wood, to MDF and MFC.

Pros of glass kitchen cupboard doors

There are a range of styles available – from Georgian framed to a simple frame.

Multiple options for glass, including bronze, mirror, frosted and standard.

Glass can be substituted for acrylic in some ranges, reducing cost and weight.

Glass doors give the illusion of a bigger kitchen.

Glass doors are super easy to clean.

Cons of glass kitchen cupboard doors

This type of door is very heavy, thus making it tricky to install.

Glass kitchen doors are expensive.

You can see clutter through a glass cabinet door.

They’re fragile.

Not all styles offer glass as an option.

The cupboard above is the Bella Shaker, with bullnose cornice/pelmet.

High gloss kitchen doors

High gloss kitchen doors are created in a range of different types – laminate, thermofoil or high gloss painted wood or lacquered wood. Applied in a similar way as vinyl, high gloss cupboards offer depth and look great in a two-tone kitchen.

Pros of high gloss kitchen doors

The light reflecting off the surface makes the room look bigger.

High gloss cabinets are more water resistant.

Because of the surface, high gloss cabinets are easy to wipe down.

Cons of high gloss kitchen doors

Due to the reflective nature of the surface, marks, fingerprints and scratches are easily visible.

This style of cupboard will need more cleaning due to the nature of the door.

High gloss costs a little more due to its popularity.

The image above is the high gloss Crossland kitchen.

Changing the colour of your kitchen cupboard doors can instantly transform your space. If you feel like this is a job you can complete yourself at home, then you would be right – there is no need to hire a professional. However, depending on the material your doors are made from, it can be difficult to achieve a perfect finish. To help, we’ve put together a simple guide to painting your kitchen cupboard doors to ensure you get the finish you want.

1. Remove handles and hinges

The first step you need to take when painting any kitchen cupboard doors is to remove the handles and hinges attached to them. This will leave you with a bare door to prepare to be painted. Removing the hinges enables you to place the door elsewhere away from the cupboard to be painted, and removes the risk of damaging the cupboard by trying to paint with the door still attached.

If you want to paint the interior/exterior of the cupboard then be sure to remove the contents of the cupboard. Also, ensure that the remaining hinges are covered with masking tape to protect them from being painted.

2. Wash and sand cupboards

If you have painted the kitchen cupboard door before then it is advised to sand down the doors before preparing them for painting. To avoid damaging the doors try using 120 to 220 grit sandpaper. Using a fine sandpaper like this will smooth out the imperfections in the wood and prepare the surface to be painted. Some cupboards can be tricky to sand due to uneven surfaces and ridges. A tip to sand these areas is to wrap sandpaper in something mouldable, such as a sponge, and use that to sand down the door. When painting over gloss or non-wooden cupboard doors this step is not required.

3. Selecting a primer

Next, once your kitchen door has been sanded down (if required) you need to apply a primer to the cupboard. This is particularly necessary with wooden doors as it stops the grain from showing up through the paint.

Shellac-based primers are recommended for kitchen cupboards because they dry quickly. Try using a small roller for this job to ensure smooth coverage. Usually, the first coat of this type of primer dries within 45 minutes and shellac primers are also good at covering the grain and any knots if your door is wood.

4. What paint to choose?

As the kitchen is the central hub of the home, it is a well lived in space and so the cupboards need to be durable. Semi gloss, gloss or satin are favoured for kitchen cupboards because they not only provide a quality finish, but they are also wipeable and hard-wearing – opposed to matt painted doors which are just impractical in the kitchen. The paint colour you select will be highly dependent on the style of kitchen and atmosphere you want to create. Kitchen cupboards are usually a dominant part of the room and so the colour you select will have a big impact. Colourful cupboards can really make your room stand out, particularly against a white or black wall. However, it can be simpler to match your cupboards to the room to create a consistent look. Essentially, the kitchen design you choose you will have to live with everyday so think carefully about your choice.

5. How to paint over gloss

Painting over glossy doors requires a slightly different primer to wooden surfaces. Use a super grip primer for glossy surfaces, these will stick to the cupboard door better than other primers. These primers usually only require one coat but may take longer to dry, so be sure to account for this. Make sure your door is cleaned of any grease, some sugar water is sufficient to wipe down your surfaces beforehand.

6. Spraying or respraying

This may seem like the quickest option when it comes to painting or repainting your kitchen cupboards, but it can be the most tricky. First, you need to cover up the entire space with plastic sheets. It may sound obvious but paint sprayers use a fair amount of air to spray paint onto surfaces. As a result, things like dust and general dirt can be blown onto your kitchen cupboard door which can leave a less than desirable finish. The chances of this happening are quite high so have a roller on hand to even out the paint and give your doors a smooth finish.Tip: Two coats should be the minimum amount you aim for to avoid a patchy or uneven finish.
