Tools You’ll Need

The only tool that you really need to adjust your wardrobe doors is a standard manual screwdriver. Do not use an electric screwdriver, as this could slip and damage your new doors. 

You could also use someone as a second pair of eyes to make sure that your doors are flush and symmetrical to each other.

What Each Screw Does

• Front screw (furthest from the back of the wardrobe) – changes the gap between the two wardrobe doors
• Middle screw (or the two which are above and below the back and front screw) – alters the height of the bedroom door (can move it up/down)
• Back screw (closest to the back of the wardrobe) – changes how close the wardrobe door is to the carcass

Moving Your Doors From Side-to-Side

If you are moving the door closer to the cabinet then you should turn the front screw in a clockwise motion. However, if you are moving the door further away from the cabinet (as it may stick out from the wardrobe unit), then you need to turn the screw anticlockwise. However, you should be careful not to loosen the screw too much, as the door could fall off.

Moving Your Doors Up & Down

If your door is the wrong height and needs moving up or down from the wardrobe unit then you should start by loosening the top and bottom hinge. This is done by turning both of the middle screws in an anticlockwise position. By doing this, you can freely level the door and move the backplate to the preferred position.

You should remember that by loosening the two screws, the wardrobe door will drop, so you could use someone else to support the weight of the door whilst you make the necessary adjustments.

How to Level Wardrobe Doors if You Are Unable to With Hinges

Sometimes, you may not be able to change your wardrobe doors with the hinges (for example if the hinges are not adjustable or you cannot adjust anymore).

What you need

Furniture wedges/ alignment adjusters/ levellers (1mm-8mm)

Putting wedges under the back legs of the wardrobe units

First, you need to put the wedges underneath the wardrobe unit on the back legs. You should use the right-sized wedge which can be worked by the amount of adjustment you need to do.

If you need to increase the height of the left-hand door, then you need to put the wedge under the back right-hand leg. 

If you need to increase the height of the right-hand door, then you need to put the wedge under the back left-hand leg.

1. First Steps

Do not just get your drill out and slam a couple of random holes into the door. Before you start it is good practice to ensure the bedroom or wardrobe door is dry and clean. Read any instructions that are provided by the manufacturer to avoid any unwanted door splits.

2. Measure Up

Once your door is prepared, measure the length between the screw holes – these are usually indicated by most manufacturers as small grooves or marks on the inside of the door. Ensure that these holes match the length between the two handle inserts (if your handle requires two screws). If your handle only needs one screw then simply make sure it is in the correct position so your handle will be central and straight.

3. Get Drilling

Another tip to avoid your bedroom door from splintering when you drill handle holes is to use an offcut of wood. Attach this offcut using a G-clamp to the outside of the door in line with where you want the handle to be. By doing this, when you drill through the door the wood will not splinter.

However, when you begin drilling the holes for your handle screws to go in do this from the inside of the door. This will protect the exterior of the wardrobe or bedroom door from any marks the drill may produce. Also, aim to use a drill bit that is slightly wider than your handle screws so you can get them into the holes you make.

4. Final Touches

Now that you have your perfectly measured and drilled holes in your bedroom door you can attach your new handle. Align your handle with the drilled holes and tighten the screws in from the inside of the door. Do not over-tighten your handle screws as this can damage the door.

1. Position the soft close hinge

Above the upper cabinet hinge, position your hinge ensuring that you align the hinge flush with the face of the kitchen unit. The hinge should be positioned so that the rubber-tipped closer arm is sticking out from the cabinet by approximately half an inch. This should slow your kitchen door down enough to prevent it from slamming when it is shut.

2. Mark and screw

Once you have found the perfect position for your soft close hinge on your flat pack kitchen units, hold it in place and mark where the screw holes are. Lightly tap these holes with a hammer to create small pilot holes where you will drill your screws in. Then, using the screws provided, position your soft close hinge over the marked holes and drill the hinge into the cabinet.

Hopefully, you can drill your screws in successfully first time. However, if you accidentally strip your screw into the incorrect position and can’t remove it with a screwdriver, there are steps you can take. When you need to know how to fit a soft close hinge, here are some easy tips to remove a poorly installed screw:

• Add material – layer some tape, steel wool or tough green part of a sponge over the screw to increase the grip you can get with the screwdriver.
• Heat the screw – using a heat gun or propane torch, heat the screw so that the metal expands and it’s grip is loosened.
• Make it a flathead – with the help of a hacksaw you can carve out a flathead top in your screw and use a flathead screwdriver to remove it.

3. Test and adjust

Now that you have your soft close hinge attached to the cabinet, test it out to check it is working properly. If it is, you should see that the door is stopped from slamming against the frame and, instead, is slowed down and shuts smoothly. Check that the cabinet door is flush against the other doors when it is shut. When fitting soft close hinges, if the hinge sticks out slightly then you will need to remove your it and reposition it accordingly to prevent this. Similarly, should the hinge not slow the door down enough to prevent it from slamming, then you will need to reposition your hinge so that the stopper sticks out from the door slightly further.

While repainting your old fitted wardrobe might not be a simple task, you can complete in an hour, the results will pay off when you see how your unique bedroom doors can transform the room’s character. Paint for Wardrobe Doors

If you are painting melamine wardrobe doors you will need to use specific melamine paint, made to cover Melamine Faced Chipboard (MFC), as melamine wood is a mixture of wood, paper and resin with a different consistency to normal wood. Melamine paint has two formulations you can choose from: you can either prime with an ordinary base coat, then finish with an MFC top coat, or use a special MFC primer, and then apply a top coat of your choice. Whichever option you choose, MFC primers and top coats are reasonably priced and widely available in all major home stores.

Select a complementary colour scheme

When you want to change the colour of your bedroom doors, you need to select a colour that matches the tones already in the room. This will give your bedroom a coordinated feel. Here are a few styles to consider:

• Monochromatic schemes: Colours from the same family will complement each other quite naturally. Different shades of the same colour can create excellent accents when you paint the closet doors.
• Cool Colour Tones: Blue base colours are considered “cool” as most people associate the colour with cooler things. Blue is also seen as a relaxing colour, which makes it perfect for the bedroom.

What you’ll need before you start painting Wardrobe Doors

• A set of screwdrivers (just in case)
• Sandpaper
• Dusk mask and safety goggles
• A vacuum
• A damp cloth
• Sugar Soap
• Primer
• Paint, a set of painting brushes and a roller
• Free space to put the door in a horizontal position

Once you have all the supplies, and a day to spare, you’re ready to begin your wardrobe repainting project! Follow the steps below:

Start with removing the wardrobe door

Firstly, position your finger behind the hinge and push forward to release the clips. This is where your helpful assistant will be needed to stop the door from falling, and help you carry it safely to your pre-located painting spot. If you’re more of a visual learner, you might want to watch this video tutorial.

If you have sliding wardrobe doors however, the procedure to remove the door might be slightly more difficult, and you will need to use a screwdriver. 

It is worth considering that the paint you’ll apply will take a sufficient amount of time to dry out. If you don’t want your clothes to be exposed to dust, flies and room smells, this is the stage when you want to replace it with a temporary solution. You can use a thick curtain, a tablecloth, cardboard, or ideally, a piece of plywood, if you can find one spare.

Next, smooth the door’s surface

While bedroom doors are unlikely to have sustained as much damage as external or internal doors, it is worth lightly sanding them with a medium to fine-grit sandpaper (120 to 220-grit), to ensure a smooth working surface. 

For any deeper cracks, use a specialist filler, which can be purchased from most home stores, to fill in and repair the cracks before sanding.

To avoid inhaling the fine dust, remember to always wear a dust mask and safety goggles when you’re sanding.

Clear the leftover dust and use sugar soap

Before you start priming, you’ll need to vacuum all the dust and wipe the surface of the wardrobe door with a damp cloth. 

Follow up by applying Sugar Soap. This light detergent is essential before completing paintwork, as it removes grease and grime without leaving any residue. Use it to wipe down the wardrobe door one final time, and you’ll be ready for the next stage.

Time to prime

Coat the top of the wardrobe door with primer, then move on to the sides. The primer will protect the door’s surface from moisture and damp, while also smoothening your working area so the paint can glide seamlessly. If you want to prime and subsequently paint the opposite side of the door, wait for the primer to dry out, before flipping it over. 

Ensure the primer has dried out completely before you begin painting. Don’t panic if the primer is not entirely smooth. You can always use the fine-grit sandpaper to even it out.

Repainting the melamine wardrobe door

Prepare your brushes, stir your paint, and start your project. Remember, investing in high-quality paint will deliver better colour-saturation, and ensure lasting results. 

Using the correct painting technique is crucial to a fantastic outcome. Paint down, starting from the top of the door, and use a wide brush for the corners and crevices. Apply two to three coats of paint, depending on the desired colour result. Small details should be repainted individually, after finishing the wider parts of the door. 

Once the paint has dried out, protect your work by applying an additional transparent top coat layer, if you wish.

Reattach the door

Reattaching your wardrobe door is as simple as taking it off. Align the hinge with the hinge plate, and click into position. Similar to Step 1, it might be better to have a friend helping you to complete this task in a safe manner.

Causes of Damp in Wardrobes

When you spot damp behind a wardrobe, there are usually one or two causes for it. These must be tackled first before anything else and – in most cases – dealing with these issues solves the problem.

Condensation

Damp and mould is usually caused by an excess of moisture building up in a particular area. When fitted wardrobes are built against exterior walls, the area behind them is cut off from the rest of the room so it doesn’t receive the heat and air circulation that it once had. This trapped space can also become humid if it is still heated slightly, which creates a prime location for mould to grow. Free-standing wardrobes can also have this problem, but moving them away from the wall is a quick and easy fix.

Wet Clothing

Hanging ‘nearly dry’ clothes up in your wardrobe is a surprisingly common cause for damp. They may seem dry enough to finish off the wardrobe, but what this does is introduce extra moisture into that small space. Once introduced, it will do what moisture does and spread out searching for dry spaces. This coupled with the darkness of the wardrobe create the perfect breeding ground for mould to grow.

Other Causes of Damp

If neither of these is the cause for the damp then you should check other parts of the property which may be affecting the bedroom unit. We suggest checking the following for signs of a leak which may be causing the damp:

• Gently sand the door. This can be done with 120-grit paper. This successfully prepares the surface for paint. Don’t remove all the existing finish on the door.
• The next step is to wash the door with a diluted detergent solution. Use a damp cloth and wipe the door down. Let the surface dry thoroughly afterwards.
• Make sure that you protect door handles or other hardware. Metal fixtures should be removed from the door or covered by masking tape before painting begins.
• The last preparatory step is to decide if the closet door needs a primer coat. A primer coat is needed if the door is a dark colour and you want it a lighter shade. A primer coat is also needed if the door was previously painted in oil and you want to use latex paint.

Repaint your wardrobe door

Now you are ready to paint your wardrobe door. Most wardrobe doors are flat so they will be easy for you to paint. Some doors may have multiple panels which requires a special technique of painting. If you have intricate doors, it is best to follow a painting pattern to produce high-quality results.

• Always paint the panels first. A small roller can cover most of the panel surfaces. Touch these up afterwards with a brush. Paint along the wood grain as it will highlight the grain and give you a cleaner look.
• Vertically and with a roller paint the vertical stile in the middle of the door that runs between the panels.
• Place the door horizontally. With a roller, paint the horizontal rails in the middle of the door.
• Next paint the two outside stiles vertically. Do this from top to bottom.
• Paint the header and footer panels between the outside stiles and panels horizontally. Use a brush or roller.
• With a roller, apply a thin film of paint along the edge of the door. Spread the paint evenly with a brush.
• Before adding a second coat to the door, let it dry completely.
• If you are repainting a flat wardrobe door, use a roller to speed up the process. Apply paint evenly. Make sure you don’t leave roller lines on the surface.
• Lastly, paint the other side of the door.
