1. First Steps

Do not just get your drill out and slam a couple of random holes into the door. Before you start it is good practice to ensure the bedroom or wardrobe door is dry and clean. Read any instructions that are provided by the manufacturer to avoid any unwanted door splits.

2. Measure Up

Once your door is prepared, measure the length between the screw holes – these are usually indicated by most manufacturers as small grooves or marks on the inside of the door. Ensure that these holes match the length between the two handle inserts (if your handle requires two screws). If your handle only needs one screw then simply make sure it is in the correct position so your handle will be central and straight.

3. Get Drilling

Another tip to avoid your bedroom door from splintering when you drill handle holes is to use an offcut of wood. Attach this offcut using a G-clamp to the outside of the door in line with where you want the handle to be. By doing this, when you drill through the door the wood will not splinter.

However, when you begin drilling the holes for your handle screws to go in do this from the inside of the door. This will protect the exterior of the wardrobe or bedroom door from any marks the drill may produce. Also, aim to use a drill bit that is slightly wider than your handle screws so you can get them into the holes you make.

4. Final Touches

Now that you have your perfectly measured and drilled holes in your bedroom door you can attach your new handle. Align your handle with the drilled holes and tighten the screws in from the inside of the door. Do not over-tighten your handle screws as this can damage the door.

1. Position the soft close hinge

Above the upper cabinet hinge, position your hinge ensuring that you align the hinge flush with the face of the kitchen unit. The hinge should be positioned so that the rubber-tipped closer arm is sticking out from the cabinet by approximately half an inch. This should slow your kitchen door down enough to prevent it from slamming when it is shut.

2. Mark and screw

Once you have found the perfect position for your soft close hinge on your flat pack kitchen units, hold it in place and mark where the screw holes are. Lightly tap these holes with a hammer to create small pilot holes where you will drill your screws in. Then, using the screws provided, position your soft close hinge over the marked holes and drill the hinge into the cabinet.

Hopefully, you can drill your screws in successfully first time. However, if you accidentally strip your screw into the incorrect position and can’t remove it with a screwdriver, there are steps you can take. When you need to know how to fit a soft close hinge, here are some easy tips to remove a poorly installed screw:

• Add material – layer some tape, steel wool or tough green part of a sponge over the screw to increase the grip you can get with the screwdriver.
• Heat the screw – using a heat gun or propane torch, heat the screw so that the metal expands and it’s grip is loosened.
• Make it a flathead – with the help of a hacksaw you can carve out a flathead top in your screw and use a flathead screwdriver to remove it.

3. Test and adjust

Now that you have your soft close hinge attached to the cabinet, test it out to check it is working properly. If it is, you should see that the door is stopped from slamming against the frame and, instead, is slowed down and shuts smoothly. Check that the cabinet door is flush against the other doors when it is shut. When fitting soft close hinges, if the hinge sticks out slightly then you will need to remove your it and reposition it accordingly to prevent this. Similarly, should the hinge not slow the door down enough to prevent it from slamming, then you will need to reposition your hinge so that the stopper sticks out from the door slightly further.

Cleaning Kitchen Cupboard Doors

Whether you have gloss, textured or matt finish kitchen doors, we’ll go through the most effective cleaning methods for each one. Kitchen cupboards have a lifespan of around 50 years, so it’s important to use the right cleaner for each specific cabinet surface to ensure their longevity.

High Gloss Finish

For high gloss kitchen cupboard doors, you will want to be gentle in order to avoid scratching the delicate surface. For day-to-day finger marks, wiping with a dry soft microfibre cloth is enough to do the trick when cleaning acrylic kitchen doors. 

For greasier clean-ups from midnight snack sessions, wipe the cabinets with a dampened cloth. A great tip is to use distilled water to avoid watermarks. Wipe up immediately after with a soft dry cloth to restore the shine. Catching messier splatters and spills as soon as they happen will help to avoid any permanent marks and staining. 

Textured Finish

There are many textured kitchen cupboard doors available, including wood and paint finish. Cleaning kitchen cabinet doors like these varies for each finish, but a good rule of thumb is to keep it simple. A mix of equal parts washing up liquid and warm water will do the trick for removing any recent food splatters and greasy fingerprints. 

For a much deeper clean, use a diluted mix of equal parts vinegar and warm water with a sponge to lift off any baked-in food and oil marks. Be sure to do a small patch test on an unseen part of your kitchen cupboard doors to ensure it doesn’t damage the finish.

Matt Finish

Matt finish cupboard doors, such as the PWS range, are exceptionally resilient to scratches, scuffs and staining, making them great for a busy family home. When cleaning matt kitchen cupboards, using soap and water is perfectly fine for everyday messes like food splatters and fingerprints. Just be sure to rinse and dry afterwards with warm water and a soft cloth to avoid soapy build-up. 

Oily fingerprints and bigger splatter marks from some serious cooking can be much more stubborn to lift off. Make a paste of baking soda and vinegar and leave it on the stain for a few minutes, then rinse off with a damp sponge. A small patch test is recommended beforehand, just to double check you’re not damaging the finish. Be sure to dry your cupboard doors off with a soft cloth to avoid water marks, and they should look good as new! 

Cleaning Handles and Knobs

Now your kitchen cabinet doors are clean, you can move on to cleaning your door handles. Kitchen cupboard handles and doorknobs are subject to grime and dirt that builds up every day. To keep your door handles looking their best, it’s important to catch any dirt and grime as soon as it happens with a dampened sponge. Be sure to dry off with a soft cloth to avoid tarnishing or water stains. 

When your kitchen cupboard handles are in need of a more thorough clean, it’s best to remove the handles by unscrewing them gently and use one of the cleaning methods below depending what material your kitchen cupboard handles are made from. 

Stainless Steel

For those difficult to remove stains, a mix of equal parts olive oil and vinegar will help to lift off any stuck on gunk. Rinse afterwards with a damp cloth, dry off thoroughly before screwing them back in. Polish your cupboard handles with stainless steel furniture polish for next level sparkle. When cleaning stainless steel, avoid using abrasives like steel wool and strong chemicals so you don’t cause permanent damage. 

Brass and Copper

Brass and copper accented kitchens are super trendy right now, from sink taps and cookware to kitchen handles. This chic look is all the rage. Use the cleaning method below to remove tarnishing and keep your brass and copper handles looking their best. 

Squeeze out some ketchup and rub a very thin coat onto your brass and copper handles. Let that sit for around 10 minutes and then rinse off with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly. Your handles are now ready to be screwed back in! You can also use this to clean your copper and brass cookware! 

Only use this method on pure brass and copper only, if you’re not sure, you can use a fridge magnet to double check the material. If your handles are solid brass or copper, the magnet should not stick to the handles. 

If cleaning handles isn’t your thing, you can opt for handleless kitchen cupboard doors. It’s a perfect option for a more contemporary-looking kitchen, plus it makes cleaning and maintenance much easier and quicker.

However, we have eight storage ideas to help you make the most out of your small kitchen space. Turns out, you don’t necessarily need more kitchen units, just an innovative mind and a bit of DIY.

1. Adding shelving in unexpected places 

As well as creating space for all of your kitchen gadgets and crockery, you want to also create some personality to your kitchen – but how can you, with hardly any space for even your kitchen essentials?!

The answer is, of course, creating shelving space, for either your decorative elements, or to store your crockery. Using above-the-window space is ideal for creating space for plants, decorative plates or dishes, and any elements you want to theme your kitchen with.

If you have no space above your windows, consider using the space above your sink and kitchen cupboard doors – add in glass panels, and store mugs, crockery or glasses to save on cupboard space, and make the most of this usually unused space.

2. Hanging crockery is the way to go

Using empty wall space is a perfect way to create extra storage space, whilst also creating some personality in your kitchen. You can use your wall space to hang pots and pans, spices, or even herbs.

If you’re hanging pots and pans, consider how many you’re hanging and the spacing you use – you don’t want to create a cluttered feeling within your kitchen, so ensure that you only include a couple. They’re also a quick win for putting dishes away and tidying up – no chance of broken crockery in this kitchen.

You can also incorporate things like cutlery and kitchen utensils – include ‘bin-like’ containers, and you can easily place all of your utensils you want to keep hidden placed in an easy-to-find place.

4. Storing everything in containers

As mentioned above, storing your herbs, spices and dry goods in containers is the best way to make your kitchen look organised, tidy and find things efficiently.

When using clear containers, you can easily stack and label your food on exposed shelves without the fear of a messy-looking kitchen, as your shelves will look organised.

If you’re lucky enough to have a pantry space, using clear containers or themed-containers can be an easy way to make the most of your space, by clearing large boxes or plastics that you buy your food in, to make room for easily stacked containers and boxes.

Using containers is also a perfect way to go zero-waste – by using containers, and buying dry goods and spices in bulk, is the best way to protect the environment from harmful packaging, as well as saving you money – because buying in bulk is much cheaper than buying boxed goods from the local supermarket.

5. Kitchen islands

Using your kitchen island is a perfect way to create extra storage space. Some islands come already prepared for this purpose with drawers, but if you’ve got an island worktop with an empty space underneath, you can create storage space for practically anything.

Whilst drawers seem like the most sensible idea for cooking essentials and cutlery, create shelves to create more space for those kitchen appliances or tools that you don’t wish to have on display.

The best thing about an island in the kitchen, is that it creates extra cooking and prepping space, whilst also providing a little more personality to your kitchen. As well as having all this extra space, you can create an eating and living area (if your kitchen is big enough!) in the kitchen, perfect when you’re having breakfast, or you want to sit and chat about your day with a member of the family! It also proves as a great place to sit and cook at the same time – sometimes, cooking can get tiring!

You can transform just about any piece of furniture into a kitchen island – an old cupboard, a chest of drawers, or even a desk. Simply add a granite or wooden worktop to the top, use a similar finish or paint to the design of your kitchen, and there you have it – extra prepping space, and more space to store your pots, pans and crockery underneath.

6. Repurpose unused vases or tins for utensils

Drawers for cutlery and utensils take up so much space for such small additions. Instead of using up precious cupboard space, use old vases, jars or even tins to store your cutlery.

You can place these on window sills or even on the dining room table without fear of creating a jumbled decorative space. Eclectic is truly the best style for your kitchen.

If you want to create a more personal touch, then you can use paints or prints to cover whatever it is you’re using to store your utensils, if you want to replicate a similar design to your kitchen space.

7. Go vertical

Similarly to adding shelf space above your windows, you can also benefit from high ceilings in another way. Using space that’s normally out of reach is the perfect way to create extra storage room for those things that you aren’t using everyday, but still need to put somewhere.

By using the space higher up in your kitchen, you can create a larger feel to the room, as well as innovating more storage space. Another plus is that you can keep things out of reach of your little ones, knowing that they won’t be able to find anything dangerous in arms reach.

To get to this space, you can use a step ladder or stool, which creates a rustic feel in the room, again bringing more personality to your kitchen and home.

8. Be smart about space

When you’re tight on space, and small on ideas, there are a few small additions you can use in the kitchen that won’t break the bank, but will save you some space and some pennies.

Using boxes, such as wicker, baskets or old storage boxes, can come in handy when you’re wanting to create a homely feel and find space to put things. Use your boxes to store chopping boards, tea towels or unsightly tins and boxes you don’t want on display.

Create a commercial feel to your kitchen, by keeping knives and sharp utensils on the wall – similar to a chef’s kitchen. The other plus side to this is that they’ll be out of the way of little one’s hands!

Keeping bins in the kitchen can also waste a lot of moving space – so consider using a built in bin that fits into a cupboard, or hang on the wall. It may sound unsanitary, but if you’re separating your recycling from your food waste, and depositing it every day outside, this method can work really well to save floor space and create an easier method of getting waste out of the way of the countertop.
