Similarly, if you believe your cabinet doors are sitting too high or too low on one side, or are not level with their neighbouring doors, you need to adjust the hinge plate. 

To do so: 

1. Open your cabinet door and locate the mounting screws (2 and 4).
   
2. Loosen the screws slightly, ensuring they do not come off completely.
   
3. Adjust the door up or down as needed, then retighten the screws once the door is perfectly level. 

Step Four (If Necessary): Adjust Your Depth Alignment

Depth alignment is necessary when your doors do not close properly or are not sitting flush. 

To do so: 

1. Open your cabinet door and locate the depth screw (3).
   
2. Turn the screw clockwise to pull the door inward toward the cabinet.
   
3. To push the door outwards, turn the screw counterclockwise. 

Step Five (If Necessary): Adjust Your Soft-Close Hinge Alignment

1. First Steps

Do not just get your drill out and slam a couple of random holes into the door. Before you start it is good practice to ensure the bedroom or wardrobe door is dry and clean. Read any instructions that are provided by the manufacturer to avoid any unwanted door splits.

2. Measure Up

Once your door is prepared, measure the length between the screw holes – these are usually indicated by most manufacturers as small grooves or marks on the inside of the door. Ensure that these holes match the length between the two handle inserts (if your handle requires two screws). If your handle only needs one screw then simply make sure it is in the correct position so your handle will be central and straight.

3. Get Drilling

Another tip to avoid your bedroom door from splintering when you drill handle holes is to use an offcut of wood. Attach this offcut using a G-clamp to the outside of the door in line with where you want the handle to be. By doing this, when you drill through the door the wood will not splinter.

However, when you begin drilling the holes for your handle screws to go in do this from the inside of the door. This will protect the exterior of the wardrobe or bedroom door from any marks the drill may produce. Also, aim to use a drill bit that is slightly wider than your handle screws so you can get them into the holes you make.

4. Final Touches

Now that you have your perfectly measured and drilled holes in your bedroom door you can attach your new handle. Align your handle with the drilled holes and tighten the screws in from the inside of the door. Do not over-tighten your handle screws as this can damage the door.

What is the standard kitchen unit size?

Before you start designing your kitchen, you may want to get an idea of the standard kitchen cabinet size used for ClicBox carcasses. This standard sizing makes it easier to fit your units accordingly and will give you an understanding of the space you have to work with when designing your kitchen. We will now outline the measurements of a standard sized kitchen unit to help you with your design ventures, particularly when selecting the right kitchen door size:

How wide are standard kitchen units?

The most common standard kitchen unit size is 60cm. However, widths of 30cm, 40cm, 80cm and 100cm are also considered standard sized carcasses. Generally, 60cm kitchen units are fitted with one door, while the larger sizes often have two. These are important things to consider when designing your kitchen. Whether you are looking for one door or two door kitchen units, the style is completely open to your own preference.

How deep are standard kitchen units?

In general, the standard depth of a kitchen unit is 60 cm. This includes the thickness of the door and drawers, but not handles. However, this may be a tight squeeze if your kitchen is less than 180cm wide. If this is the case, why not opt for 50cm deep units to give the impression of a larger kitchen. If you want extra storage but don’t have the floor space, wall units are a great way to spare up some room.

How tall are standard kitchen units?

The heights of kitchen units can vary, but kitchen units and worktops are usually fitted at around 90cm. This standard sizing helps to ensure that your countertops are easy to use and easily replaceable. However, there are always custom made or reduced-height options available so that you can build a worktop space that is more comfortable for your stature.

Appliance and unit widths

The standard size of kitchen appliances, such as sinks, fridges, ovens and dishwashers are 60x60cm. This is a good size to have in mind whilst creating a rough plan for your new kitchen. If you have a large space for your kitchen, you may want to choose bigger appliances such as a fridge-freezer or a range stove – these are typically around 90cm+ wide. If your kitchen is on the smaller size, it may be worth looking for appliances that are slightly smaller than the average size to give you extra floor space.

Distance between base units

Based on two standard 60cm kitchen base units, you will need at least 120cm distance between them for two kitchen doors to be open at the same time. You do not want to be stuck in a situation where the kitchen cupboard doors can’t fully open. This is also a good figure to keep in mind if you want your kitchen to feel spacious. However, this may not always be possible, particularly for galley kitchen styles. If your kitchen is very narrow, why not opt for kitchen units with drawers rather than doors? This way, a minimum distance of 90cm is recommended between the base units on either side of the room.

1. Position the soft close hinge

Above the upper cabinet hinge, position your hinge ensuring that you align the hinge flush with the face of the kitchen unit. The hinge should be positioned so that the rubber-tipped closer arm is sticking out from the cabinet by approximately half an inch. This should slow your kitchen door down enough to prevent it from slamming when it is shut.

2. Mark and screw

Once you have found the perfect position for your soft close hinge on your flat pack kitchen units, hold it in place and mark where the screw holes are. Lightly tap these holes with a hammer to create small pilot holes where you will drill your screws in. Then, using the screws provided, position your soft close hinge over the marked holes and drill the hinge into the cabinet.

Hopefully, you can drill your screws in successfully first time. However, if you accidentally strip your screw into the incorrect position and can’t remove it with a screwdriver, there are steps you can take. When you need to know how to fit a soft close hinge, here are some easy tips to remove a poorly installed screw:

• Add material – layer some tape, steel wool or tough green part of a sponge over the screw to increase the grip you can get with the screwdriver.
• Heat the screw – using a heat gun or propane torch, heat the screw so that the metal expands and it’s grip is loosened.
• Make it a flathead – with the help of a hacksaw you can carve out a flathead top in your screw and use a flathead screwdriver to remove it.

3. Test and adjust

Now that you have your soft close hinge attached to the cabinet, test it out to check it is working properly. If it is, you should see that the door is stopped from slamming against the frame and, instead, is slowed down and shuts smoothly. Check that the cabinet door is flush against the other doors when it is shut. When fitting soft close hinges, if the hinge sticks out slightly then you will need to remove your it and reposition it accordingly to prevent this. Similarly, should the hinge not slow the door down enough to prevent it from slamming, then you will need to reposition your hinge so that the stopper sticks out from the door slightly further.

Turn to Your Trusty Friend Google

While you might have dotted all the I’s and crossed the T’s  in your plan, it’s a good call to turn to Google and Pinterest for some design inspiration – particularly as there may be design considerations that you hadn’t thought about. Gas and Electricity

It’s probably best not to take a gamble on safety. We recommend getting all electrical and gas installations done by a professional to minimise the hazards in your home. In the UK this is a legal requirement when fitting gas appliances which requires the work of an engineer with a gas safety certificate. 

Be as Precise as Can Be 

When measuring and mapping out where to place your new fixtures and fittings, precision is key. Whilst it sounds simple, google’s collection of construction fails beg to differ. Avoid creating a meme inspired kitchen by using a spirit level to ensure that everything is straight. It’s also important to think logically about the practicality of your design. Are there any doors that will be blocked from opening? Are the sockets too close to the cooker or too high from the countertops? These are all important questions which will help you to achieve your ideal kitchen.

While repainting your old fitted wardrobe might not be a simple task, you can complete in an hour, the results will pay off when you see how your unique bedroom doors can transform the room’s character. Paint for Wardrobe Doors

If you are painting melamine wardrobe doors you will need to use specific melamine paint, made to cover Melamine Faced Chipboard (MFC), as melamine wood is a mixture of wood, paper and resin with a different consistency to normal wood. Melamine paint has two formulations you can choose from: you can either prime with an ordinary base coat, then finish with an MFC top coat, or use a special MFC primer, and then apply a top coat of your choice. Whichever option you choose, MFC primers and top coats are reasonably priced and widely available in all major home stores.

Select a complementary colour scheme

When you want to change the colour of your bedroom doors, you need to select a colour that matches the tones already in the room. This will give your bedroom a coordinated feel. Here are a few styles to consider:

• Free space to put the door in a horizontal position

Once you have all the supplies, and a day to spare, you’re ready to begin your wardrobe repainting project! Follow the steps below:

Start with removing the wardrobe door

Firstly, position your finger behind the hinge and push forward to release the clips. This is where your helpful assistant will be needed to stop the door from falling, and help you carry it safely to your pre-located painting spot. If you have sliding wardrobe doors however, the procedure to remove the door might be slightly more difficult, and you will need to use a screwdriver. 

It is worth considering that the paint you’ll apply will take a sufficient amount of time to dry out. If you don’t want your clothes to be exposed to dust, flies and room smells, this is the stage when you want to replace it with a temporary solution. You can use a thick curtain, a tablecloth, cardboard, or ideally, a piece of plywood, if you can find one spare.

Next, smooth the door’s surface

While bedroom doors are unlikely to have sustained as much damage as external or internal doors, it is worth lightly sanding them with a medium to fine-grit sandpaper (120 to 220-grit), to ensure a smooth working surface. 

For any deeper cracks, use a specialist filler, which can be purchased from most home stores, to fill in and repair the cracks before sanding.

To avoid inhaling the fine dust, remember to always wear a dust mask and safety goggles when you’re sanding.

Clear the leftover dust and use sugar soap

Before you start priming, you’ll need to vacuum all the dust and wipe the surface of the wardrobe door with a damp cloth. 

Follow up by applying Sugar Soap. This light detergent is essential before completing paintwork, as it removes grease and grime without leaving any residue. Use it to wipe down the wardrobe door one final time, and you’ll be ready for the next stage.

Time to prime

Coat the top of the wardrobe door with primer, then move on to the sides. The primer will protect the door’s surface from moisture and damp, while also smoothening your working area so the paint can glide seamlessly. If you want to prime and subsequently paint the opposite side of the door, wait for the primer to dry out, before flipping it over. 

Ensure the primer has dried out completely before you begin painting. Don’t panic if the primer is not entirely smooth. You can always use the fine-grit sandpaper to even it out.

Repainting the melamine wardrobe door

Prepare your brushes, stir your paint, and start your project. Remember, investing in high-quality paint will deliver better colour-saturation, and ensure lasting results. 

Using the correct painting technique is crucial to a fantastic outcome. Paint down, starting from the top of the door, and use a wide brush for the corners and crevices. Apply two to three coats of paint, depending on the desired colour result. Small details should be repainted individually, after finishing the wider parts of the door. 

Once the paint has dried out, protect your work by applying an additional transparent top coat layer, if you wish.

Reattach the door

Reattaching your wardrobe door is as simple as taking it off. Align the hinge with the hinge plate, and click into position. Similar to Step 1, it might be better to have a friend helping you to complete this task in a safe manner.
