No matter how perfect your fitted kitchen may seem, the slightest out-of-place element can disrupt the balance. If your kitchen cabinet doors are rubbing, uneven, or not closing properly, it is time to learn how to adjust them to keep your kitchen looking neat and functional.

Over time, doors can become misaligned due to everyday use and humidity, making your space appear unnatural. Fortunately, learning how to adjust kitchen cabinet doors properly is a simple, cost-effective way to dramatically improve your kitchen’s appearance without calling in a professional.

With just a screwdriver, you can transform your kitchen in minutes, achieving perfect alignment and showcasing it as it deserves.

Why Are My Kitchen Cabinet Doors Unaligned?

Unaligned cabinet doors occur naturally over time, so it is essential to know how to quickly fix this issue for a time-effective solution to keep your kitchen professionally finished.

With temperature fluctuations in a kitchen, moisture can fluctuate and naturally loosen fixtures. There are many other common causes, such as:

Daily Use: Opening and closing cabinets will naturally misbalance your hinges and fixtures over time.

Changes in Humidity: This can cause wood doors to expand or contract, affecting their position.

Uneven Installation: If your cabinet doors have been installed unevenly or walls have begun to settle, this will also cause misalignment.

Loose Screws: Natural wear and tear will affect the alignment of your doors.

Heavy Items: Any items stored on your cabinet doors, such as towel hooks or organisers, will affect the alignment.

Regardless of the cause, adjusting cabinet doors is a simple, straightforward task that requires only one tool.

Understanding The Types Of Hinges You’ll Be Adjusting

Taking time to understand the type of hinges you are working with is essential to restoring your alignment.

Many modern kitchens with handleless designs may use push-to-open hinges, which are concealed within the cupboard to give an effortless finish. In contrast, other kitchens may use mounted or butt hinges, which are visible from the outside to offer a more traditional finish.

Although the use and functionality of both are similar, the screw positions differ, so it’s essential to determine which approach to take before proceeding. If you are still unsure, search online for the brand name or model number for specific adjustment instructions.

Most common hinges will have three adjustable screws, each of which controls a separate function within the movement of the cabinet door:

Side-To-Side Adjustment: This adjustment is the most commonly needed, as it moves the door left to right to correct gaps.

Height Adjustment: This adjustment raises or lowers the door as needed.

Depth Adjustment: Finally, the depth adjustment is necessary to move the door closer to or farther from the unit frame, ensuring the door sits flush against it.

Now that you have understood the function of each element of the door’s hinges, you are ready to begin learning how to adjust your kitchen cabinet doors for a simple DIY fix.

How To Adjust Kitchen Cupboard Doors

Step One: Check Your Door For Misalignment

Take a step back from your cabinets and assess the following:

Do your doors overlap?

Are your doors too high, or too low?

Do your doors sit flush with the cabinet frame?

Are your doors failing to close properly?

Is there an uneven gap between the doors?

Identifying your issue will help you determine which adjustment method is needed and by how much.

Step Two (If Necessary): Adjust Your Side-To-Side Alignment

If your cabinet doors are rubbing together, crooked, or misaligned with their neighbouring doors, a Side-To-Side adjustment is necessary.

To do so:

Open the cabinet door and locate the adjustment screw (1).

Turn the screw clockwise to move the door closer to the hinge.

To turn the screw further away, turn the screw counterclockwise.

Take your time to ensure the doors are level and no longer rub against each other.

Step Three (If Necessary): Adjust Your Height Alignment

Similarly, if you believe your cabinet doors are sitting too high or too low on one side, or are not level with their neighbouring doors, you need to adjust the hinge plate.

To do so:

Open your cabinet door and locate the mounting screws (2 and 4).

Loosen the screws slightly, ensuring they do not come off completely.

Adjust the door up or down as needed, then retighten the screws once the door is perfectly level.

Step Four (If Necessary): Adjust Your Depth Alignment

Depth alignment is necessary when your doors do not close properly or are not sitting flush.

To do so:

Open your cabinet door and locate the depth screw (3).

Turn the screw clockwise to pull the door inward toward the cabinet.

To push the door outwards, turn the screw counterclockwise.

Step Five (If Necessary): Adjust Your Soft-Close Hinge Alignment

If your kitchen cabinets have soft-close mechanisms, there is a simple way to fine-tune their closing speed. For example, if your doors slam shut or struggle to close, adjusting the mechanisms can easily slow or speed up the process.

Most soft-closing hinges operate on small switches, so a low-resistance switch will produce a slower, gentler close, whereas a high-resistance switch will produce a firmer, quicker close.

Step Six: Tighten All Screws

Once your kitchen cabinet doors are correctly aligned, check that all hinges have been tightened if loosened and that no screws are missing or out of place. Test each door to ensure it opens and closes fully as designed, and that it will not misalign, for a polished, perfected kitchen.

Extra Tips For Polished Alignment

To ensure your kitchen cabinet doors are showroom-standard, follow these additional steps to achieve a polished finish.

Make Small Adjustments: Making large turns while adjusting your screws can cause overcorrection, so take your time and be patient between turns to ensure proper alignment and ease of use.

Align Doors In Pairs: For cabinets with double doors, adjust them simultaneously to ensure a uniform finish.

Use the Right Tools: There is no need for fancy tools or a professional; a simple Phillips screwdriver will do the trick.

Replace Old Hinges Where Necessary: If your hinges won’t tighten, are loose, or your soft-close function isn’t working, then it may be time to replace them.

Clean Your Hinges Regularly: Once you have mastered the art of hinge alignment, ensure you clean and dust your hinges regularly, as grease can affect hinge operation.

Common Alignment Problems and Simple Fixes

Here are a few simple fixes for common alignment problems that may occur:

My Door Won’t Fully Close: Adjust your depth screw (3) to bring the door closer to the frame.

My Doors Are Rubbing Together: Adjust your side-to-side screw (1) to control the gap between them.

My Doors Are Sagging: Retighten the height-adjustment screws (2 and 4) and verify that the hinge arms are correctly connected.

My Doors Are Twisted: This may be a combination problem – adjust and test each of the screws slowly to see which alignment benefits you.

Why Does Proper Kitchen Door Alignment Matter?

Correctly aligning your kitchen doors is a quick, simple process that will elevate your kitchen to a showroom standard in minutes. Although it may seem daunting, adjusting kitchen cupboard doors is one of the easiest DIY fixes you can do, and it will enhance your home’s overall value. With regular maintenance and care, your home can be functional, accessible and looking professional in just a few simple steps.

1. First Steps

Do not just get your drill out and slam a couple of random holes into the door. Before you start it is good practice to ensure the bedroom or wardrobe door is dry and clean. Read any instructions that are provided by the manufacturer to avoid any unwanted door splits.

2. Measure Up

Once your door is prepared, measure the length between the screw holes – these are usually indicated by most manufacturers as small grooves or marks on the inside of the door. Ensure that these holes match the length between the two handle inserts (if your handle requires two screws). If your handle only needs one screw then simply make sure it is in the correct position so your handle will be central and straight.

3. Get Drilling

Another tip to avoid your bedroom door from splintering when you drill handle holes is to use an offcut of wood. Attach this offcut using a G-clamp to the outside of the door in line with where you want the handle to be. By doing this, when you drill through the door the wood will not splinter.

However, when you begin drilling the holes for your handle screws to go in do this from the inside of the door. This will protect the exterior of the wardrobe or bedroom door from any marks the drill may produce. Also, aim to use a drill bit that is slightly wider than your handle screws so you can get them into the holes you make.

4. Final Touches

Now that you have your perfectly measured and drilled holes in your bedroom door you can attach your new handle. Align your handle with the drilled holes and tighten the screws in from the inside of the door. Do not over-tighten your handle screws as this can damage the door.

When working with wooden replacement bedroom doors make sure you take the proper safety precautions and use safety eyewear and gloves.

If you are looking for a new selection of wardrobe or bedroom handles then check out our full range of handles and hinges. We are certain you will be able to find the right style to fit in with the rest of your bedroom.

With the cost of living continuously rising and budgets being increasingly stretched, many homeowners are looking at ways they can improve the look and feel of their home whilst remaining to a strict budget. One of the ways they can do this is by doing some simple DIY projects around the home, to refresh their home without blowing their bank balances.

When it comes to DIY projects for the home, there are plenty of craft ideas for adults you can explore. Think about revamping your indoor and outdoor furniture, DIY wall art, pallet projects and quick fixes. All you’ll need to complete most DIY projects are some basic power tools, a set of screwdrivers, a hot glue gun, paint and, of course, lots of creativity. To help you with the last part, we’ve assembled a list of DIY home projects you can do. It is also remembering that at The Hub, we have several blog posts on weekend DIY projects which you can complete when you have a spare few days

1. Build a pallet sofa

Pallet furniture has risen in popularity in recent years, and we’ve seen it all – from outdoor pallet bars to eco-friendly pallet beds. But above all, pallet garden furniture has been the most popular project for DIY enthusiasts. A pallet sofa can be quite simple to build, and you can purchase used wood pallet packs for as cheap as £10. To assemble your pallet sofa, simply cut and attach the pallets to the desired height, secure the backs and throw some colourful cushions on top (which you can also make yourself!).

2. Turn your chest of drawers into a planter

Bring some colour and life into your old chest of drawers by transforming it into a useful plant holder, for an easy DIY project to do with the kids. All you’ll need is some tester pots of paint, plants ready for repotting or some new seeds to plant, soil and plastic lining to put on the inside of the drawers.

You can also do this with your own kitchen drawers if you were planning on swapping them with new kitchen units. Instead of throwing away the old drawer boxes, why not turn them into funky planter boxes?

3. Change the cabinet handles or the door knobs

You’ll be surprised to discover the difference new, stylish door knobs can make in upgrading your interior. This simple job will take less than an hour, a set of screwdrivers and your new handles. Add a vintage touch with a brass door knob, or elevate your modern kitchen with stainless steel handles.

4. Decorate your walls with DIY wall art

This DIY home decor project involves pressed flowers and is an easy and cheap way to entertain the kids during an afternoon. First, you’ll need to collect flowers and plant leaves from your garden or buy some from the shop. Then spend an afternoon cutting them to the desired length and pressing them between the pages of heavy books. The plants will then take up to a month to fully dry but it will be fully worth it when completed. Revisit the task in a month, and spend another afternoon arranging the dried flowers and botanicals in empty picture frames.

5. Make a DIY Macrame plant hanger

If you are looking for easy crafts to do at home the Macrame plant hanger might present you with a bit of a challenge. However, these plant hangers are very fashionable right now and will add some rustic chic to your balcony or living room, plus the knotting technique can be super relaxing. This DIY decor idea can be quite cheap as well, with Macrame cords costing as little as £6 for 50 metres. You can find various step-by-step instructions and video tutorials online, and choose between levels of difficulty and intricate designs.

6. Upgrade your bedroom

There is no reason to pretend that recently, we have all been spending much more time in our bedrooms, whether you are working from home, or binge-watch our favourite TV programmes. Inevitably, most of us have noticed that their bedroom can really do with a bit of upgrade and refreshing, and what a better way to do this, than turning the whole room into a DIY project. There are so many things you can do to add character – from sewing your own curtains to repainting the walls with tester pots of paint or replacing your worn-out wardrobe doors. You could even really push the boat out and buy some new furniture for your bedroom and upgrade some of those worn out units. Spend a day creating a plan, spread the budget and get to work.

If you want to give your kitchen a new lease of life and a makeover, you should consider replacing the existing cupboard doors with new ones. Replacement kitchen doors are cheaper than remodelling your whole kitchen, but what should you do with your old cabinet doors? Put your DIY skills to the test with these 10 fantastic ways to upcycle instead of disposing of old kitchen doors.

1. Serving Tray

When recycling units, why not take your smaller kitchen cupboard doors and turn them into serving trays? All it takes is a quick lick of paint and an additional handle on each side of the table. If you’re feeling extra creative, why not add an illustration in the centre? You’ll have a classic serving tray that’s perfect to use for relaxing TV dinners or when you’re having a lazy day in bed.

2. New kitchen island worktop

If you’ve found yourself with a surplus of kitchen cupboard doors laying around, why not make a new worktop with repurposed cabinet doors? Kitchen Islands are a great way to add additional storage and surface space to your kitchen. Why not upcycle your old Unique kitchen doors and turn it into a kitchen island worktop? Matte doors work better than gloss as they don’t show up as many marks. When you recycle kitchen cabinets, you can repaint matte doors if needs be.

Source: indulgy

3. Photo frames

Another great way to upcycle your cabinet doors is by turning them into photo frames. Simply cut out the main door and use string to create rows for your photographs to hang from. If you’re not so DIY savvy, you could even just glue your photos to the original door and create an awesome collage.

Source: thriftydecorating

Whether you need to hang up towels in the bathroom, pet leads in the hallway or coats in the bedroom, old kitchen doors provide the perfect foundation for a unique and rustic coat rack. Simply find some quirky hangers and attach them to the door frame. You could even use your old door-knobs as hangers.

Sometimes, choosing the right kitchen for your home can be a bit of a minefield. Before getting new pre built kitchen units fitted, it is important to consider the size of your kitchen, your minimum and maximum budget, the electricity outlets available, the positioning of your windows and the shape of the room. Although you may have certain restraints, we’ve have created a basic guide to standard kitchen door sizes and kitchen cupboard dimensions to help answer some of your queries.

What is the standard kitchen unit size?

Before you start designing your kitchen, you may want to get an idea of the standard kitchen cabinet size used for ClicBox carcasses. This standard sizing makes it easier to fit your units accordingly and will give you an understanding of the space you have to work with when designing your kitchen. We will now outline the measurements of a standard sized kitchen unit to help you with your design ventures, particularly when selecting the right kitchen door size:

How wide are standard kitchen units?

The most common standard kitchen unit size is 60cm. However, widths of 30cm, 40cm, 80cm and 100cm are also considered standard sized carcasses. Generally, 60cm kitchen units are fitted with one door, while the larger sizes often have two. These are important things to consider when designing your kitchen. Whether you are looking for one door or two door kitchen units, the style is completely open to your own preference.

How deep are standard kitchen units?

In general, the standard depth of a kitchen unit is 60 cm. This includes the thickness of the door and drawers, but not handles. However, this may be a tight squeeze if your kitchen is less than 180cm wide. If this is the case, why not opt for 50cm deep units to give the impression of a larger kitchen. If you want extra storage but don’t have the floor space, wall units are a great way to spare up some room.

How tall are standard kitchen units?

The heights of kitchen units can vary, but kitchen units and worktops are usually fitted at around 90cm. This standard sizing helps to ensure that your countertops are easy to use and easily replaceable. However, there are always custom made or reduced-height options available so that you can build a worktop space that is more comfortable for your stature.

Appliance and unit widths

The standard size of kitchen appliances, such as sinks, fridges, ovens and dishwashers are 60x60cm. This is a good size to have in mind whilst creating a rough plan for your new kitchen. If you have a large space for your kitchen, you may want to choose bigger appliances such as a fridge-freezer or a range stove – these are typically around 90cm+ wide. If your kitchen is on the smaller size, it may be worth looking for appliances that are slightly smaller than the average size to give you extra floor space.

Distance between base units

Based on two standard 60cm kitchen base units, you will need at least 120cm distance between them for two kitchen doors to be open at the same time. You do not want to be stuck in a situation where the kitchen cupboard doors can’t fully open. This is also a good figure to keep in mind if you want your kitchen to feel spacious. However, this may not always be possible, particularly for galley kitchen styles. If your kitchen is very narrow, why not opt for kitchen units with drawers rather than doors? This way, a minimum distance of 90cm is recommended between the base units on either side of the room.

If you are looking for a made to measure, fully fitted kitchen, or need any help in choosing bespoke bedroom or kitchen accessories, we will be more than happy to help. All you have to do is take the measurements of the room, pick the furniture you want, and we shall send it your way.

There are fewer more jarring household sounds than slamming kitchen cabinet doors. Thankfully, there is a simple solution to this common issue many have in their home – soft close hinges. These hinges slow down kitchen cupboard doors when they shut so they close smoothly and silently – reducing unwanted banging and crashing in the kitchen. We have outlined three easy steps on how to fit soft close hinges in your home.

1. Position the soft close hinge

Above the upper cabinet hinge, position your hinge ensuring that you align the hinge flush with the face of the kitchen unit. The hinge should be positioned so that the rubber-tipped closer arm is sticking out from the cabinet by approximately half an inch. This should slow your kitchen door down enough to prevent it from slamming when it is shut.

2. Mark and screw

Once you have found the perfect position for your soft close hinge on your flat pack kitchen units, hold it in place and mark where the screw holes are. Lightly tap these holes with a hammer to create small pilot holes where you will drill your screws in. Then, using the screws provided, position your soft close hinge over the marked holes and drill the hinge into the cabinet.

Hopefully, you can drill your screws in successfully first time. However, if you accidentally strip your screw into the incorrect position and can’t remove it with a screwdriver, there are steps you can take. When you need to know how to fit a soft close hinge, here are some easy tips to remove a poorly installed screw:

Add material – layer some tape, steel wool or tough green part of a sponge over the screw to increase the grip you can get with the screwdriver.

Heat the screw – using a heat gun or propane torch, heat the screw so that the metal expands and it’s grip is loosened.

Make it a flathead – with the help of a hacksaw you can carve out a flathead top in your screw and use a flathead screwdriver to remove it.

3. Test and adjust

Now that you have your soft close hinge attached to the cabinet, test it out to check it is working properly. If it is, you should see that the door is stopped from slamming against the frame and, instead, is slowed down and shuts smoothly. Check that the cabinet door is flush against the other doors when it is shut. When fitting soft close hinges, if the hinge sticks out slightly then you will need to remove your it and reposition it accordingly to prevent this. Similarly, should the hinge not slow the door down enough to prevent it from slamming, then you will need to reposition your hinge so that the stopper sticks out from the door slightly further.

We offer a range of hinges for your cupboards such as standard 110 degree as well as 30 degree soft close hinges.

If you’re on a tight budget or have an exact vision for your kitchen, fitting your kitchen yourself might be a tempting option. Before ripping out your entire kitchen and getting stuck, here are our tips on how to fix a kitchen.

How Easy is it to Fit a Kitchen?

Fitting a kitchen not only requires you to apply yourself physically but also mentally to navigate your way through instructions and problem solve if you hit a brick wall. Given this and the skills to use power tools, fitting a kitchen should be achievable for most DIY-ers.

Kitchen Fitting DIY Tips

Our tips have not been created to act as a step by step guide but to shed light on how you can improve the design of your space and be more efficient in your build. Designed to serve everyone from beginners to experienced kitchen fitters, you’ll have no problem following along.

Observe Once Dismantled

Once stripped of your rigid kitchen units, sink and worktops, observe your bare kitchen. This is the best time for you to treat any previously hidden, underlying issues such as damp, that may have been lurking behind your kitchen wall cabinets. Whilst in this phase of your build, we recommend adding your first layer of paint while there are no hard to reach areas. Don’t worry, it doesn’t need to be perfect as the final layers will go on once everything has been installed. It’s also good practice to use this time to map out the most efficient floor plan and revise any existing versions to make every inch of your kitchen work for you.

Maximise Space

Now that you have a blank canvas, also think about adjusting the current system of organisation in your kitchen. Is there anything on your kitchen worktops that can be hidden away by giving it some cupboard space? Creating kitchen units to hide appliances such as oven housings can help to add more usable space on your countertops for cooking and open up your kitchen to avoid it feeling small.

Turn to Your Trusty Friend Google

While you might have dotted all the I’s and crossed the T’s in your plan, it’s a good call to turn to Google and Pinterest for some design inspiration – particularly as there may be design considerations that you hadn’t thought about. For example, kitchen sinks are often fixed in front of widows. Three areas we urge you to look at when planning are your source of light, number of appliances, the size of your room, the number of sockets required and where. You can read more, in our post on The Essential Guide to Kitchen Layouts

Gas and Electricity

It’s probably best not to take a gamble on safety. We recommend getting all electrical and gas installations done by a professional to minimise the hazards in your home. In the UK this is a legal requirement when fitting gas appliances which requires the work of an engineer with a gas safety certificate.

Be as Precise as Can Be

When measuring and mapping out where to place your new fixtures and fittings, precision is key. Whilst it sounds simple, google’s collection of construction fails beg to differ. Avoid creating a meme inspired kitchen by using a spirit level to ensure that everything is straight. It’s also important to think logically about the practicality of your design. Are there any doors that will be blocked from opening? Are the sockets too close to the cooker or too high from the countertops? These are all important questions which will help you to achieve your ideal kitchen.

Repainting your ageing wardrobe doors can be an economical way to freshen up the style and colour of your bedroom interior, bring out your chosen colour scheme, and transform your bedroom to match the latest home decoration trends.

While repainting your old fitted wardrobe might not be a simple task, you can complete in an hour, the results will pay off when you see how your unique bedroom doors can transform the room’s character. Similar to interior doors, wardrobe doors need to be removed before painting, so consider enlisting the help of a friend.

Paint for Wardrobe Doors

If you are painting melamine wardrobe doors you will need to use specific melamine paint, made to cover Melamine Faced Chipboard (MFC), as melamine wood is a mixture of wood, paper and resin with a different consistency to normal wood. Melamine paint has two formulations you can choose from: you can either prime with an ordinary base coat, then finish with an MFC top coat, or use a special MFC primer, and then apply a top coat of your choice. Whichever option you choose, MFC primers and top coats are reasonably priced and widely available in all major home stores.

Select a complementary colour scheme

When you want to change the colour of your bedroom doors, you need to select a colour that matches the tones already in the room. This will give your bedroom a coordinated feel. Here are a few styles to consider:

Monochromatic schemes: Colours from the same family will complement each other quite naturally. Different shades of the same colour can create excellent accents when you paint the closet doors.

Cool Colour Tones: Blue base colours are considered “cool” as most people associate the colour with cooler things. Blue is also seen as a relaxing colour, which makes it perfect for the bedroom.

Muted Colours: Selecting subdued tones for your wardrobe doors gives a bedroom a soothing quality. This will also help with making it easier for you to relax.

Neutral Hues: Colours such as brown, grey and cream are considered neutral. If a colour has a less saturated intensity the more neutral it is. These colours always mix well with others which allows you to change the feel of the room with the change in seasons.

Before commencing with the painting of your wardrobe doors, make sure you have prepared the right materials.

What you’ll need before you start painting Wardrobe Doors

A set of screwdrivers (just in case)

Sandpaper

Dusk mask and safety goggles

A vacuum

A damp cloth

Sugar Soap

Primer

Paint, a set of painting brushes and a roller

Free space to put the door in a horizontal position

Once you have all the supplies, and a day to spare, you’re ready to begin your wardrobe repainting project! Follow the steps below:

Start with removing the wardrobe door

Firstly, position your finger behind the hinge and push forward to release the clips. This is where your helpful assistant will be needed to stop the door from falling, and help you carry it safely to your pre-located painting spot. If you’re more of a visual learner, you might want to watch this video tutorial.

If you have sliding wardrobe doors however, the procedure to remove the door might be slightly more difficult, and you will need to use a screwdriver.

It is worth considering that the paint you’ll apply will take a sufficient amount of time to dry out. If you don’t want your clothes to be exposed to dust, flies and room smells, this is the stage when you want to replace it with a temporary solution. You can use a thick curtain, a tablecloth, cardboard, or ideally, a piece of plywood, if you can find one spare.

Next, smooth the door’s surface

While bedroom doors are unlikely to have sustained as much damage as external or internal doors, it is worth lightly sanding them with a medium to fine-grit sandpaper (120 to 220-grit), to ensure a smooth working surface.

For any deeper cracks, use a specialist filler, which can be purchased from most home stores, to fill in and repair the cracks before sanding.

To avoid inhaling the fine dust, remember to always wear a dust mask and safety goggles when you’re sanding.

Clear the leftover dust and use sugar soap

Before you start priming, you’ll need to vacuum all the dust and wipe the surface of the wardrobe door with a damp cloth.

Follow up by applying Sugar Soap. This light detergent is essential before completing paintwork, as it removes grease and grime without leaving any residue. Use it to wipe down the wardrobe door one final time, and you’ll be ready for the next stage.

Time to prime

Coat the top of the wardrobe door with primer, then move on to the sides. The primer will protect the door’s surface from moisture and damp, while also smoothening your working area so the paint can glide seamlessly. If you want to prime and subsequently paint the opposite side of the door, wait for the primer to dry out, before flipping it over.

Ensure the primer has dried out completely before you begin painting. Don’t panic if the primer is not entirely smooth. You can always use the fine-grit sandpaper to even it out.

Repainting the melamine wardrobe door

Prepare your brushes, stir your paint, and start your project. Remember, investing in high-quality paint will deliver better colour-saturation, and ensure lasting results.

Using the correct painting technique is crucial to a fantastic outcome. Paint down, starting from the top of the door, and use a wide brush for the corners and crevices. Apply two to three coats of paint, depending on the desired colour result. Small details should be repainted individually, after finishing the wider parts of the door.

Once the paint has dried out, protect your work by applying an additional transparent top coat layer, if you wish.

Reattach the door

Reattaching your wardrobe door is as simple as taking it off. Align the hinge with the hinge plate, and click into position. Similar to Step 1, it might be better to have a friend helping you to complete this task in a safe manner.

Your old wardrobe now looks brand new, all thanks to a simple repainting makeover.

If you’re thinking of getting your kitchen remodelled, you’re probably in the process of learning about the potential expense for installation, appliances, flat pack kitchen units, kitchen doors and other miscellaneous items. There are many factors which can affect the overall cost of a new installation. These include expenses for materials, your location, the costs of distribution and labour, as well as the size and shape of your current kitchen, combined with your dream layout.

Average spend for a new kitchen

The average spend for kitchen renovations in UK homes for a bespoke kitchen is between £10,001 and £25,000, including labour. Installation costs are always depending on the size of your kitchen and how easy it is to complete the project. Those with a small kitchen will expect to pay less than someone with a large kitchen.

Kitchen installation is a difficult and tricky task – due to this, it’s always best left in the hands of a professional fitter. The renovation cost takes into account the sum of new kitchen appliances and any other preparation work that may be needed, such as ripping out the old kitchen cabinets, kitchen units and worktops and plastering walls or removing any wallpaper. Not taking this into account, you would be looking at an average cost of £8,000 for a medium sized kitchen.

Factors that determine pricing

As stated previously, there are many factors that can determine the pricing of a new kitchen. Factors that affect the cost of a kitchen remodel all depend on the existing units or walls you have and how much you are prepared to do yourself.

Doing your own demolition is a good way to save money when remodeling a kitchen. However, it’s crucial that you take care to avoid any potential breaks in pipes or electrical wiring as this can be dangerous and, in some cases, cause even more unnecessary costs to put right. The costs for both labour and materials can vary depending on where you live and the scale of your project.

Cost of hiring an architect

If you’re thinking of expanding the size of your kitchen or moving any walls or units, you’ll probably need to consult an architect beforehand. The cost of hiring an architect will typically set you back an additional 8-15% on top of your existing project cost.

Cost of hiring a contractor

A contractor will usually charge you between 10 and 20 percent of the total cost of the job. Although some may charge a flat fee, general contractors will pay themselves by taking a percentage of the overall cost of the completed project.

Cost of hiring a kitchen designer

A kitchen designer can be a profitable and knowledgeable asset to your new kitchen remodel. Not only do they have experience with kitchen designs and tricky issues, but they can provide options and ideas that you may not have thought of. The cost of hiring a certified kitchen designer can cost from £30 to £60 an hour, or 10% of your total project cost.

Setting a budget for your new kitchen

When it comes to remodeling your kitchen, it is important to set a budget. While most will try to stick to this, it’s always important to give yourself a bit of leeway in case any unexpected issues and costs appear that you did not plan for.

Tips to make your kitchen remodel more affordable

1. Keep the same layout

One of the biggest savers you can make when remodeling your kitchen is to retain the same layout. By doing this, you can avoid having to spend money moving around any plumbing or wiring. Often, if this is the case you can expect to add another full day’s labour.

2. Keep it simple

When designing a new kitchen, materials account for about 80% of your budget so a good way to cut costs is to focus your efforts on making concessions within this area. For example, rather than choosing high gloss kitchen cupboard doors or handleless kitchen units, pick a less expensive acrylic or shaker kitchen door. Or, choose opt for rod or t-bar handles instead of contemporary handles.

3. Do a little yourself

Another way to limit your spending is to also add in some manual labor that you do yourself. For example:

Remove any old cabinets, countertops or appliances yourself

Pick up any materials instead of having them delivered to avoid any delivery fees

Paint walls or door and window frames on your own rather than paying someone else

Kitchen remodel cost breakdown

A good way to calculate your budget for your new kitchen is to allocate your funds. The only way to build a good cost estimator is to understand how much each element will cost. The following breakdown of kitchen remodelling costs by percentage of total budget was put forward by the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association:

One of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to remodelling your home is “How long does it take to redo a kitchen?”. It’s a good question. Whether you’re looking to remodel within a certain time frame such as before a big party or family event, or if you’re simply interested in knowing when your home will be back to normal. Either way, it’s crucial to understand the realistic time frames when it comes to remodeling your kitchen. Due to this, we have complied together a few guidelines, as well as a realistic schedule that you can refer to.

Kitchen Planning

This can usually be the most lengthy process but it’s also considered the most fun! The design phase allows you to experiment with different styles, appliances, flooring, flat pack kitchen carcasses, pattern and colour schemes. It also gives you a chance to think about the more detailed specifications such as kitchen door handles, kitchen sinks and kitchen taps. All of these, are important and crucial aspects when it comes to building and designing your own kitchen so remember to take your time, do your research and don’t be afraid to branch out of your comfort zone.

Once this phase is complete, you can then move on to the actual remodelling of your kitchen.

Finding a Contactor

Finding the right contractor for you is an important and valuable stage of your kitchen remodelling therefore it’s important to take your time with this phase. If you choose to go with us, we here at Lark and Larks, have a wide range of designs to choose from that are available to buy online. From the ultra modern slab kitchen style through to traditional tongue and grooved door style kitchens, our online store makes it easier than ever before for you to search through and find the right style for you and your home.

Once you’ve decided on a contractor, a contract will then be put together for your review which typically takes about a week. This contract will include a description of the work that needs to be done and an estimated timeline for completion.

Finalising Design Process: 1-4 Weeks

The time frame for this can again depends on the scope and size of your kitchen or project. Before, you begin construction, make sure you know exactly what you want and discuss with your contractor that this is a realistic expectation as well as time and cost worthy.

It is also advised that you use this time warn any neighbours that may be wary about your renovation due to noise or other inconveniences. Tell them what to expect and how long the project is expected to last and at the end of t all invite them over to see the finished product!

Removing Your Current Kitchen: 1-2 Days

Once you have found your contractor and decided on the design of your new kitchen, the next step is to declutter and remove any existing kitchen units, flooring, countertops, and appliances from your old one. This can typically take a couple of day but it depends on how big or small your current kitchen is. During this time it is advised to declutter and sort out what you want to keep and what you want to lose.

Demolition or Structural Changes: From 2-3 Days to 2-3 Months

Moving a Wall or Changing Window Placement

Once you have stripped out your kitchen back to it’s basics, it’s time to start thinking about any changes within your existing interior walls. This should be considered in the design process as this can often be the longest and most strenuous task of your kitchen remodelling. Be aware of any plumbing or electrics that may be in the way as these will need to be avoided or rewired.

Now that you’ve stripped the space down to the studs, it’ll be easy to get new plumbing or electrical where it needs to go. Consider whether any plans need to be altered now that you can see what’s behind the walls.

Reroute Plumbing and Electrical

Once construction of the available space is complete, you can now start thinking out rerouting all the plumbing and electrical to fit your desired interior. This is your opportunity to move any large electrical equipment positioning such as dishwasher, stove or refrigerator.

Painting Your Kitchen: 2-3 Days

Painting is a lot easier to manage on a blank canvas so make sure you paint your kitchen walls, ceilings and trims before any babinets or utilities are installed. Your colour schemes will have been decided in your design process but perhaps think about incorporating a feature wall into your design to brighten up the space. The importance of colour is crucial and when it comes to picking the perfect colour for your kitchen, it must reflect the style and tone you want from your design.

Kitchen Floor Installation: 2-5 Days

The installation time on your flooring can depend on the space you have to fit and the material you have chosen to use in your new kitchen. It also depends on whether you are doing it yourself or getting a professional to do it for you. All these factors can have an impact on the time it takes to install flooring into your new kitchen.

Kitchen Cabinet Installation: 3-5 Days

Once your flooring is in, you can then start to begin installation on your base units, wall units and kitchen storage cabinets. The time scale for this can again depend highly on whether you are installing it yourself or using a professional. Additionally, the more cabinets you have the longer it will take to install.

Kitchen Lighting Installation: 1-2 Days

Lighting installation will be the first step in making you kitchen feel a little bit more homely. This is usually a quick and simple task, however, if you decide to install yourself it’s always advised to ask for some professional advice beforehand.

Kitchen Utility Installation: 1-2 Days

Finally, finish your kitchen remodelling by adding all the extra details such as decor, plants, crookery, glassware and cookbooks. Use this time wisely as a change to re-organise your kitchen cupboards and design a fresh start for you brand new kitchen.

At Kitchen Door Hub, we have a range of bespoke kitchen cupboard doors to choose from to help you design your new kitchen and make your dream become a reality. Contact us today to find out more.
